Is your child constantly fighting colds, coughs, seasonal allergies and earaches?
Does your child suffer from sleep disturbances, anxiety or experiencing hyperactivity preventing them from getting adequate rest and focused down time?
Then Shonishin might be the answer!
What is shonishin?
One of my favorite modalities for treating children in the clinic is sho-ni-shin pediatric acupuncture. Shonishin is a gentle, non-invasive form of treatment for infants and children. Originally from Japan, Shonishin is based on Chinese acupuncture techniques dating back at least two thousand years.
To this day, many Japanese parents bring their children to shonishin practitioners for regular treatment.
Shonishin uses a specialised set of small metal tools, none of which are actually inserted into the child’s body. Your paediatric practitioner uses these tools to stroke, rub, tap and press the skin to give different kinds of gentle stimulation. These techniques help strengthen your child’s constitution, build and maintain their immune system, and stop the recurrent illness merry-go-round.
What age can receive shonishin?
Kids may begin treatments at birth, and continue until the age of 10. at which time they can begin regular acupuncture treatments.
What does it treat?
Weak constitution, weak immune system, colds, cough
Failure to thrive
Colic, excessive night crying, temper tantrums, behaviour issues
Digestive health, GERD, constipation, stomachache
Night terrors, sleep issues
Hyperactivity, ADHD, poor concentration, anxiety
Eczema, hives, and skin disorders
Bronchial Asthma/Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic Ear Problems (often more effective than antibiotics; may avert surgery)
Chronic Urinary Tract Infection
How does it work?
Have you ever been surprised by how quickly your child gets sick? I know I have. One minute they are really well and the next minute they are not. However, on the flip side of this coin is that children respond much quicker than adults to treatments such as shonishin, and recovery can be just as quick. Shonishin treatments promote healing by stimulating endorphin production in the body.
These endorphins otherwise known as neurotransmitters are the bodies natural pain killers and have been found to enhance the immune response.
Significant, even dramatic, changes in symptoms are often seen during the course of a short treatment, and/or during the hours and days that follow a treatment.
What does treatment involve?
A treatment involves your child sitting on your lap (unless they are older and are happy to lie on the treatment table) whilst their whole body is worked over with the gentle techniques.
The treatment can take any where from five minutes to fifteen minutes depending on the age of your child and how busy they are. Your child doesn’t need to sit still. They are followed around the room receiving the treatment on the go if necessary. It’s a quick process that kids love.
Does it hurt?
Many children love their treatments and look forward to the next one because it is non-invasive and painless. Children generally find the treatment very relaxing and fun, as no pain or discomfort is felt.
How often does my child need treatment?
Children with specific health concerns normally complete a series of one on one consultation sessions to help correct any imbalances and once they are feeling well they then can attend the Shonishin wellness clinic. The dose and strength of each treatment
will depend on the age and general health of your child.
The “less is more” philosophy is the general approach that works best.
Because children respond so quickly to Shonishin can be considered as an alternative to the overuse of western treatments, such as antibiotics. The earlier treatment is begun, the more likely it is that it can be controlled, preventing it from lingering and leading to problems later in life.
Treating children once per month encourages preventative care and a sense of importance in maintaining self-care over a lifetime. Often, children receiving regular care will be able to decrease or eliminate the use of allopathic/prescription medicines. These short well-child treatments also allow the child to get to know the practitioner before they are ill so that they will be more comfortable receiving treatment when they are in need.
One of the real gems of Shonishin treatment is that parents have access to a preventative treatment regime for their children that will aim to keep them in good health and wellness.
What is a full moon clinic?
A Full Moon Shonishin clinics provide well-child care that catalyzes the body to correct imbalances before diseases arise.
In Japan, every month at the full moon, brightly colored flags are raised to remind people that it is a special time to treat their children. Full Moon treatments are given each month on or just before the full moon for general wellness. It is during this time that children are more sensitive to change. Often, symptoms that are hidden during the rest of the month become more apparent during this time. The same way the full moon affects the tides, it affects people too –especially children!
Children often develop fevers, grow taller, or have a tooth break through the gum at this time of the month. It is because of their increased sensitivity that children respond quickly when treated with the building energy of the full moon.
These treatments are designed as balancing treatment that strengthen the child’s constitution and boost their immunity. Your child doesn’t need to be sick or have any complaints or symptoms to benefit from a full moon treatment. This is a great opportunity to keep your child in good health or get your child into better health. In addition you will gain valuable information and tools to use yourself to help your children maintain wellness.
This is why I love Shonishin!
